This Guy Proves Anyone with a Keyboard can be Stupid

I don’t know if Leanord Shapiro is a blogger or whether his work appears in the Washington Post on a regular basis.
What I do know is that this post about Mixed Martial Arts and CBS is absolutely ridiculous and worthless.

Nor do I have any idea what “ Special to washingtonpost.com” means. Does it mean that this is exclusive to the newspaper’s website ? My guess is that in this case it actually describes Mr Shapiro’s reduced faculties and no one wants to use a pejorative adjective. Hence the use of the word “special”.

What I do know is that Mr Shapiro is hopelessly out of touch, and unquestionably uneducated about Mixed Martial Arts and the athletes that participate when he says “You put two guys (usually heavily tattooed) in a ring enclosed by a cage, surrounded by a howling mob, and just watch the blood flow as they pummel themselves into submission, or occasionally break a bone or three. That’s entertainment?”

The he shows his sexist side with ” Oh yes, women will also fight it out on CBS, yet another revolting development.”

Then to show how little mis-informed he is ” Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is getting involved, promoting MMA matches and also airing them on his HDNet channel on DirecTV. For that alone David Stern ought to fine and suspend him. He probably yells at those refs, too “.

Hey Leanord, HDNet is on every smart cable and satellite provider reaching more than 66mm homes. But if you get us on DirecTV, thats great. Maybe yo (more…)

Be my Support Group

People want to be understood.  That’s why support groups are
so popular.

  • The alcoholic wants to connect with somebody else who showed
up drunk at a wedding and embarrassed the bride.

  • The compulsive overeater wants to know that he’s not the
only one who has stopped at the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru on the way home to
    eat a dozen before dinner.

  • The out-of-control gambler wants to be in community with
other people who have lost their car going “all in” with pocket sevens.

We all have problems, and we all want to know that we’re not
alone.

Wednesday evening I posted a comment on a friend’s blog.  Or rather, I tried
to post a comment.

True to my tendencies, it was really far too wordy to be
called a comment.  I actually spent about half an hour wordsmithing a
multiple-paragraph response.

But when I hit the submit button to post it, Wordpress gave
me a generic error page.  Presumably something timed out while I was crafting
my reply.

And when I hit the Back button, my comment was gone.  :-(

*&%$#@!

My mind raced.  What are my options here?

Maybe I should just re-type the whole thing?  It was only
300 words or so.

Nah.  The text I wrote was perfect.  I probably won’t be
able to remember it just the way it was.

And why should I have to?  Firefox and Wordpress screwed
this up, not me!

Solving big business problems in our little toolbox application. A use case for Project Distributor.

Project Distributor: Introduction to our distributed web service model
So Darren and I have put in about a month now on the Project Distributor website. We are starting to reach that critical point where the site is pretty cool, we have plenty of users, we are thinking about running out of the allowable bandwidth for the demo site, and all sorts of other things that tend to happen all at once. Now, there are some problems you can design yourself out of, and others that you really have to throw some money at. Our latest enhancements can be summed up in a short list.

  • Buy a domain name and start hosting in two places. Project Distributor.com should be up fairly soon to accompany MarkItUp.ASPXConnection.com
  • Have people host their own versions of the application. And that means a big source release is in the future. At this juncture risk fragmentation.
  • Design away fragmentation with a series of ingenious features that will make everyone want to use the application at hand.

I’m here to talk about the last two, since Darren already bought some additional hosting for us. The concept will be to release a fairly stable version of the application so that groups can host tools, code snippets and other source/binary releases for their teams to share. The application is very lightweight and easy to set-up, so it won’t require a bunch of hand holding and configuration to get up and running initially. From our standpoint we solve a number of issues at this juncture. The most obvious problem is what we classify the Lutz Roeder use case..NET Reflector is the key type of application we’d love to get hosted because it makes it a bit easier to find, not that Google does a bad job, we’d just like to get a bunch of tools in one place, with some features for feedback, new releases, and some cool client tools for publishing.

Updated Finalization and Hosting

My original posts on Finalization and Hosting had some hokey XXXXX markers in place of content, where that content hadn’t already been disclosed in some form.  Now that the Visual Studio 2005 Community Preview is available, I’ve gone back to those two posts and replaced the XXXXX markers with real text.

Also, it’s obviously been a while since my last post.  I started writing something this weekend, but the weather here has been spectacular and I was compelled to go outside and play.  I’ll try to have something in the next couple of weeks.

I’m a Firefox guy. The only reason I use it instead of IE is that it feels faster. Seriously.

I find it incredibly annoying that the only websites I frequent that require IE are those run by Microsoft. I’ve nothing against IE (I’ve never had the malware problems), but these websites disrupt whatever I’m doing. Most times I’ll just avoid the site. A good example is the MSN Video portion of MSN. Occasionally I’ll click a link leading to a video, at which point I’m told that I can’t watch it in anything but IE. This is odd since 1/2 of the emails I get link to funny videos on websites that do let me watch them in my browser of choice. Instead of launching IE and watching the (advertiser-supported) MSN Videos I simply move on. I’ve got too much stuff to do to be inconvenienced by this.

Which is why I was pleasantly surprised by the following error message. The site doesn’t support Firefox — but they’re working on correcting it. It’s a problem, and they’re fixing it. Bravo!

I havent been blogging much over the past several months.  The main reason is time, or the lack thereof.  Since I dont have time to write a “proper” blog post, I’m just going to start sharing some link love…

Here are a few interesting links I have spent time perusing today:

  • Thirteen Simple Rules for Speeding Up Your Web Site  - a great checklist to review before releasing any public website into the wild.
  • dhtmlxGrid – an open source (but commercial) editable DHTML grid with AJAX support.
  • Edit Individual GridView Cells – an article on how to make clickable ASP.NET gridview cells to allow for a rich editing experience.
